Greyscale Solarpunk formed during an artist residency at Beelarong Community Farm in Meanjin/Brisbane, July to September 2025.

In our current epoch, we are increasingly faced with dystopian impressions of our future, and rightly so. The artistic and social Solarpunk movement presents an alternative position, though perhaps a little greenwashed when reduced to merely an aestheic. In response to this, here is a greyscale perspective, of ephemeral moments unfolding, agroecological care, and the steady radical act of community. While considering human action impacting macro food systems from policy to narrative, this series is a visual representation of life within this small place of growth. In black and white, often associated with nostalgia, we are reminded of the reality of impermanence in soil ecology, life sustaining food, and ourselves. Guided by The Sustainable Darkroom and inspired by ecological processes, these images were developed in handmade botanical based chemistry using responsibly collected plant material onsite at Beelarong Community Farm.

Kym has been invited to return to Beelarong Community Farm to resume experimentation of botanical processes as part of another artist residency commencing July 2026.
